Who should be using supplementation?
Owing to our modern lifestyle, not everyone manages to eat a healthy diet and can, therefore, benefit from daily supplementation.
There are trillions of cells in your body that communicate with one another every second and your body replaces 300 hundred billion cells every day. These cells need good nutrition to function properly and are fueled daily by your diet. If your diet is lacking then supplementation is required.
There are a few risk groups that definitely need additional supplementation:
-
- Everyone with a compromised immune system or is on chronic medication as these deplete nutrients in the body.
- Breastfeeding or lactating women
- The eldery
- Children under the age of 5 (as they are still developing a strong immune system)
- People with special dietary preferences that limit certain foods, such as (e.g. vegans)
How quickly will I start feeling better by taking supplementation?
The external benefits of supplementation will only become noticeable after consumption of a few months, in terms of improved energy levels, better skin, etc. Internally, your body will experience the effects immediately, as nutrients are absorbed and channeled to where they are needed in the most.

Can supplementation be harmful if I consume too much?
Taking more than you need is always more expensive and can also increase the risk of experiencing side effects. For example, getting too much vitamin A can cause headaches and excess iron can cause nausea and vomiting. The Dept of Health in South Africa subscribes to international daily supplementation guidelines, called RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) and we follow the same guidelines for optimal benefit. Always follow the recommended dosage as indicated on the container.
Is supplementation better than conventional (prescribed) medicine?
Supplementation can never replace conventional (prescribed) medicine but supports it. When taking supplements you are strengthening your body’s natural systems, defences and cell metabolism to fight disease or infections with minimal side effects. Supplementation stabilizes the body by replenishing depleted nutrients onto which the cause can be chronic medication. It is always good to take your prescribed medication with appropriate supplements for optimal wellness. Always consult your doctor before discontinuation of any conventional medicine.
